RHS drops to 6-2 in GNC

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

Close didn’t count in the win column Friday night when the Rhinelander High School varsity girls basketball team lost its Great Northern Conference game by two points at league-leading Lakeland Union High School, 65-63.

A key statistic in the game’s outcome was free-throw percentage with the Hodags making fewer than half of their shots (9-22). The Thunderbirds had half as many attempts and made 63.6 percent (7-11).

RHS had three players end up scoring in double figures. Kenedy Van Zile had a team-high 24 points, which included four 3-pointers, followed by Ally Seefeldt with 15 points and Maddie Meyer scoring 12 more.

LUHS’s three players scoring in double figures included Melissa Bruckner with a game-high 25 points, which included three 3-pointers, followed by Abby Parris with 13 points and Olivia Killian with 10 points.

The Hodags dropped their season record to 6-2 in the GNC, tied with Medford for second in league play, and 9-8 overall. The Thunderbirds improved to 8-0 in the GNC and 13-5 overall.

Up next for RHS is a non-conference home game Monday night against Crandon before hosting Northland Pines in league play this Friday.
