STAR JOURNAL REPORT

After opening the season with two non-conference victories, the Rhinelander High School varsity football team could only generate one touchdown Friday when the Hodags lost their Great Northern Conference opener at Mosinee, 27-7.

The Indians jumped out to a two-touchdown lead with scoring runs of 2 yards from Kelvin Lassa and 52 yards from Parker Samples before RHS scored its only touchdown of the game with 5:23 left in the first half when Logan Freund connected on an 8-yard scoring strike to Colton Krueger.

Mosinee, which recorded a touchdown in each quarter, expanded its lead in the second half when Samples ran into the end zone from 37 yards away and Justin Stubbe added a scoring run of 10 yards.

The Indians outgained the Hodags in total offense, 340-185. Mosinee recorded 261 rushing yards with 239 yards on the ground coming from Samples on 23 carries. Indians quarterback Jace Baumann completed just four of 15 passes for 79 yards and was intercepted twice.

RHS could only muster 19 rushing yards on 29 carries. Freund completed 20 of 37 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.

The Hodags, who dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNC, host their next conference game Friday against Merrill.
