RHS 9-7 overall

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team is back on the winning track after winning both games at last weekend’s tournament in Merrill.

RHS snapped its seven-game losing streak by opening tournament play Friday with a 5-0 victory over Medford.

“Our kids had a lot of energy and played hard as a group,” said Hodags head coach MJ Laggis. “We took a lot of shots on goal recording 51 shots. I was really happy with our team.”

RHS scored twice in the opening period on goals from Freddy Wisner and Matthias Schneider and tallied three third-period goals from Brandon Kolasa, Abe Laggis and Conor Pequet.

Seth Stafford made eight saves to record the shutout win in goal for the Hodags.

HODAGS 5, BLUEJACKS 1

After giving up the first goal Saturday, RHS did the rest of the scoring to win the championship game over Merrill/Wausau East, 5-1.

“Again we entered the championship game with a lot of energy and got it going our way after Merrill/Wausau East scored first,” MJ Laggis said.

Christian Matson scored for the Bluejacks 14:49 into the opening period with the Hodags able to tie the game about a minute later on a goal from Abe Laggis.

RHS scored twice in the second period with goals from Wisner and Harlan Wojtusik and then added two third-period goals from Bridger Flory and Abe Laggis.

Stafford made 10 saves to record the win in goal.

RHS, which had its non-conference road game scheduled for Monday against Stevens Point Pacelli cancelled because of the wintry weather, now has a season record of 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the Great Northern Conference going into Thursday’s home conference game against Medford.
