BOYS BASKETBALL: Hodags hold off Indians, 62-59

After trailing by six points with about 5 minutes left to play Friday night, the Rhinelander High School varsity boys basketball team closed out its Great Northern Conference road game with an 11-2 scoring run to win at Mosinee, 62-59.

The Hodags, who led by a point at halftime, pulled back in front at 59-57 with just under 3 minutes left in the second half after an 8-0 run that included a 2-point basket by Owen White, a 3-pointer by Junior Howard and another 3-point basket by Brad Comer.

RHS kept the lead until the final buzzer. Comer made one of two free throws with 2:35 to play. The Indians pulled within a point on a 2-point basket with less than a minute left before Brock Lieder closed out the scoring for the Hodags on a 2-point shot. Mosinee then had an opportunity to tie the game, but was unable to score in the final 28 seconds.

The Hodags had two players end up scoring in double figures with White tallying 17 points and Lieder adding 10 points.

RHS shot 21-51 (41.2 percent) from the field overall, 8-24 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range and 12-22 (54.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Hodags improved their season record to 6-0 in the GNC and 12-1 overall going into this Friday’s conference game at Lakeland Union High School.

Hodags: Junior Howard 8, Brad Comer 9, Bryce Schickert 4, Jared Haug 2, Brad Quade 3, Reese Flores 9, Owen White 17, Brock Lieder 10. 3-pointers: Flores 3, Howard 2, Comer 2, Quade. Free throws: 12-22. Fouls: 16.
