Students in the 2018-19 building trades class at Rhinelander High School showed off the fruits of their labor Friday afternoon at an open house at the home they helped construct for a Habitat for Humanity family. The home, at the corner of Phillip and Crescent Street on the city’s west side, was built at the high school in two sections and then hauled to the site via a flatbed truck.
Habitat for Humanity and the family will finish the home, adding to what the students built.
When asked what they got out of the nine-month project, “We learned just about everything about building a house,” said Bryce Schickert. Nathan Lawrence added,”..and don’t be a dry waller!”
But they learned more than just construction, Schickert said, such as “Key things in life like work ethic and teamwork and leadership.”
“Even if we don’t do a career in this,” Lawrence said, “There will be add-ons and rennos” that they may be able to tackle themselves.
Makayla Koser said she took the class to aid her design career, but decided architecture might suit her better. One of the best parts of the project for Koser and Schickert.
“We got to see the little girl that was moving in so that was kind of cool. She brought us cookies,” Schickert said. Koser added, “That made it all worthwhile, that little girl coming up to [us] for a hug and seeing her smile.”
We’ll have a complete report in the June 12 Star Journal.
