EAGLE RIVER – As part of its Sustainable Living Institute series of programs, Trees For Tomorrow is holding a composting class April 20. The course will cover how to set up, use and maintain a composting system, and includes the opportunity to take home a 128-gallon composting bin. Instruction will take place on Trees For Tomorrow’s campus in Eagle River 9-11 a.m. and will be held indoors.
Attendees will learn about incorporating composting into their regular routine that will allow them to contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle while enjoying personal and environmental benefits of composting in this lecture-style class.
Reduced Waste: Composting allows you to divert kitchen and yard waste from your trash bins, significantly reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Soil Enrichment: Compost is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that enhances soil structure and fertility. Adding compost to your garden improves soil health, promoting better plant growth and resilience.
Emission Reduction: When organic waste breaks down in landfills, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting instead of landfilling helps mitigate methane emissions and supports a more sustainable waste management approach.
Personal Connection to Nature: Composting allows you to connect with the natural cycles of decomposition and regeneration, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
“As a program coordinator, I am thrilled to offer this composting workshop to our community, said program coordinator Todd Starling. “Composting is not just a way to recycle organic waste; it’s a transformative practice that empowers individuals to actively contribute to a healthier planet. Through this workshop, we aim to provide participants with the knowledge and tools they need to turn kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost, fostering a sustainable and regenerative connection with the environment. By including the option to include the composting bin, we hope to make sustainable living not only accessible but also an enjoyable journey towards a greener future for all.”
Attendees have the option to attend the class with or without purchase of the 128-gallon compost bin, which can hold six to eight 30-gallon bags of yard material. Made from 100% recycled plastic, the Home Composter includes a door that slides open at the bottom for easy access, is well-ventilated to decompose organic materials well, and has a tight lid that keeps pests out. It is NOT available in retail stores.
For those interested in attending the class without purchasing a composting bin, registration costs $25 for an individual or $40 for a couple. If participants want to leave class with Home Composter registration is $85 per individual or $100 per couple (one bin provided per couple). Restrooms and water station are available on campus. Registration can be completed online at https://www.treesfortomorrow.com/Current-Activities/ or by calling the Trees For Tomorrow main office at 715-479-6456.
