Gearing up for icy waters
By Star Journal staff
The Rhinelander Fire Department has been gifted four ice rescue suits from the Seventh Day Adventist Thrift Shop and Rhinelander Lions. These replace gear that is more than 30 years old. The suits are insulated, waterproof and they float, which allows more mobility.
Fire Chief Brian Tonnancour said many of the rescues involve retrieving pets and fishing gear from the icy waters; and noted that if the RFD doesn’t help, citizens will try to do the rescue themselves, which isn’t always a good idea. “These suits allow us to better serve the community and keep people safe and dry,” he said.
