David J. Hallas, age 80 of Cecil, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2019, in Tomahawk.  Born Oct. 7, 1938, in Waukegan, Ill., he is the son of the late Joseph and Irene (Povilaitis) Hallas.  David and Margaret Rose ‘Midge’ Lahr were united in marriage on March 20, 1962, in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  David served his country honorably in the United States Army.

Midge and David adored celebrating each of their grandkids fifth birthdays by taking them out west on their very own camping trip. David cherished camping with the family and took numerous trips to the Porcupine Mountains and Yellowstone National Park where he could often be found hiking with his walking stick.

He was very proud to be a longtime Mason and belonged to Mason Woods Lodge 368. In his free time he was fond of golfing and snowmobiling.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret (Dean) Cook of Tomahawk; his son, David Hallas, Jr. of Rhinelander; his grandchildren, Crystal Hallas, Ashley Lundberg, Amanda (Mark) Snow, Lindsy (David) Frelich; three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brynlee and Ava; his siblings, Penny (Ray) Charbonnier and Gary (Sherry) Hallas all of Illinois; as well as his companion, Jean Ziegler.

David is preceded in death by his wife, Midge; his parents, Joseph and Irene; and a sister, Nancy Peterson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano. Military Honors will be conducted by the Shawano American Legion Post 117. Prior to the funeral, a Masonic service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.  www.swedbergfuneralhome.com.
