45th annual Gem and Mineral Show July 19 and 20

The 45th annual Gem and Mineral Show presented by the Lakeland Gem Club, will be held Friday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lakeland Union High School.

The theme for this year’s show will be “Gems and Minerals of the Great Lakes States.”

Guest speakers will be Bill Rickert, “Let’s talk about Thompsonite,” Friday, 11 a.m.; Dr. Gary Richards, “The Montreal mine,” slide presentation, Friday, 1 p.m.; Jeff Lynott, “What does a geologist do, anyway? Tales and pictures from the field,” Saturday, 11 a.m.; and Phillip Oliver, “How to value your Lake Superior agate,” slide presentation, Saturday, 1 p.m.

The Northwoods Wildlife Center will present wildlife education and the Northwoods Children Museum will have children’s activities.

The Rock Doctor will be on hand to help identify rocks and minerals. The “Kids Store” will return with a new Wheel of Rock. Participants will be given the chance to chose their own geode and watch as it is broken open. Handmade jewelry, demonstrations, fluorescent mineral display, a silent auction and door prize will also be available.
