The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team opened a busy week with a home conference dual over Stevens Point Pacelli on Tuesday, then closed it out Thursday with a doubleheader on the road, sweeping wins at Wausau Newman and Merrill.
The Hodags topped Pacelli 5-2 at the Rhinelander courts. Pacelli took the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles matches, but Rhinelander answered by winning singles flights 2 through 4 along with doubles 2 and 3.
At No. 1 singles, Annie VanderGalien pushed reigning conference singles player of the year Morgan Matowitz to a third-set tiebreaker after taking the first set and dropping the second, but couldn’t close it out.
Rhinelander made up a rained-out match at Wausau Newman, winning 6-1, then swept a scheduled dual at Merrill 7-0 on the way home.
