Giving back to those in need
By Lori Adler, reporter
Seeing a need and wanting to help, Sarah Wesenberg donates her time and expertise by offering free haircuts to those utilizing Rhinelander Area Food Pantry.
Sarah, originally from Phelps, graduated from the cosmetology program at Nicolet College about three years ago and operates her business, Styles by Sarah Kay, out of the Magic Scissors hair salon in Rhinelander. She’s been at the food pantry cutting hair four times so far this year.
“It’s nice to give back,” she remarks, adding, “If everyone gave back where they could, no one would want for anything.”
Sarah cuts hair for about eight people during each of the two-hour time slots she volunteers. She states that these haircuts are some of her more drastic ones since people in need often go without a hair cut for long periods of time.
Sarah enjoys the happiness she brings by helping people to look and feel their best, but she is also hoping to inspire others into action.
“I’m just an army of one right now,” Sarah states, adding that she feels everyone has a skill they could share with those less fortunate.
In addition to being an inspiration to others, she has goals for her own future as well. Sarah is planning to increase her volunteering at the food pantry to once a month and perhaps add volunteer hours at the homeless and women’s shelters as well. She also hopes to promote volunteering among her future employees.
“My goal is to have my own salon,” Sarah explains, “and have everyone who works for me do something like this.”
The next time Sarah will be cutting hair at Rhinelander Area Food Pantry will be Wednesday, November 20, from 4-6 p.m. Anyone who qualifies for the food pantry services can have their hair cut by Sarah for free.
