Viewpoint: Writer wants brother released from institution
Editor:
My brother recently sent a letter to the Star Journal (re: “Writer feels he should not have been committed,” June 30, 2013), indicating how corrupt our local government is. Our local legal system can be corrected much, it’s not like they were trying to release someone into the community that would commit harm to someone or take a gun to someone or himself.
Our local system doesn’t want to take on liabilities or responsibilities and admit that they wouldn’t have released my brother in society, that he would have committed suicide or harmed someone else. This isn’t the issue; the real reason was the hospitals and the area mental institutions had labeled my brother with schizophrenia. He had to be placed on medicine for it.
My brother was placed inside these mental institutions with this form of a mental disorder labeled to him. He got out of those particular institutions and resided in Rhinelander for a year and had another trial to prove he wasn’t a threat to himself or anyone else.
He won the trial and moved into an apartment and has been living in Rhinelander for the past two years. He has other health issues and family problems, which leads him to be depressed more. Just because someone is depressed doesn’t mean they would commit suicide. I get depressed and I’m on antidepressants. He went in recently since December 2012 to our local hospital, and the doctors labeled him again with having schizophrenia; this had to go to trial again.
What I don’t understand is if we have a local legal system in place and whether this judge helped his case out before or that judge didn’t help him out. How can he be placed into these situations if it was proven in court with our local legal system that he wasn’t a threat to himself or anyone else? He had to fill out a police report and it indicated he would not commit suicide. It was even in writing.
Wouldn’t our local court system need to file a repeal based on the fact that my brother won his court trial and did not pose a threat to himself or to anyone? No, our country took it upon their findings from the doctors again that labeled him with schizophrenia. He lost his case and had to spend six months in an institution.
Recently, he had another trial and lost that one as well.
I think my brother has been unjustly institutionalized by our local court system. If our local doctors can commit him with the aid of our local legal system, how come the doctor at the facility he is in cannot take progress notes to determine if he can come out?
We also must understand that we might have to abide by our local authorities to a point, but we have an even greater authority, which is in heaven. My brother may have to be accountable to these men’s laws, but a local legal system will have to answer to God’s laws in the end. Romans 6:23. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on Earth has been given to me.”
