RHINELANDER – The annual Veterans Day ceremony took place Friday at the Oneida County Courthouse. Veterans Day is Nov. 11; formerly known as Armistice Day to honor the end of WWI, the holiday was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.
Oneida County Veterans Service Officer Tammy Javenkoski was the keynote speaker at the event. During her address, she urged members of the audience, especially the students, to talk with a veteran and listen to their stories.
“I hope if you get a chance to visit with a veteran, you take advantage of that opportunity,” Javenkoski said. “They can tell you stories you’ll never read in a history book. Someday we won’t have the honor and privilege of hearing about history from the men and women who were there.
“Never pass up an opportunity to listen to a veteran for those moments are fleeting and you’ll be amazed by their stories.”
Also participating in the ceremony were Assistant CVSO and emcee Jason Dailey,; American Legion Post 7 Commander Robert Smith; Nativity of Our Lord Junior High Choir and the Northwoods Honor Guard. State Rep. Rob Swearingen and Amy Swearingen were special guests.
