Hodag Highlights – week of Aug. 28

SOCCER
The boys soccer team opened conference play Aug. 29 against Medford, a team they have played first the last few years. Play went back and forth the whole first half with neither team taking control. The first half ended 0-0.
The second half saw the same back and forth play but in the 70th minute Medford misplayed a ball and Will Gretzinger was able to get control and on a breakaway was able to bury a shot to the back of the net to give the Hodags the 1-0 lead which would also be the final score. Medford took three shots on goal, including a penalty shot; the Hodags had six shots on goal.
TENNIS
The Hodag girls tennis team hosted Stevens Point Pacelli Aug. 29 in their conference opener. Pacelli won the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches against Tori Riopel and Dawsyn Barkus, but the rest of the field for the Hodags won their matches to win the meet 5-2.
Winning for the Hodags were Shayla Coppenger at No. 3 singles in three sets, Becca Brost won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. At No. 1 doubles Kayla Tessman and Karmen Lopez won in three sets while the No. 2 doubles team of Evelyn Sawyer and Brooke Sisel and the No.3 doubles team of Mya Patrick and Willow VanDenHeuvel won in straight sets.
VOLLEYBALL
Conference volleyball began Thursday night with Antigo coming to Rhinelander. The Hodags were hoping to break their conference winless streak. Despite playing competitively, the home team lost 21-25, 19-25 and 20-25.
