Snowmobile clubs, county urge caution

By Star Journal staff

Two more deaths today bring to six the number of snowmobile fatalities in Vilas and Oneida counties since Thursday, Jan. 26, and nine statewide since Jan. 14.

The Vilas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call just before noon today on Trail 70 in the town of Cloverland. The caller reported two snowmobiles collided. Both operators, a male age 78 and a male age 43, were pronounced dead at the scene. No further information is available at this time.

Looking at the current winter snowmobile season, the Wisconsin DNR fatal accident summary shows there were 16 fatalities the entire year in 2022; 13 snowmobile fatalities in 2021.

The Oneida County Forestry Department, in partnership with the Oneida County Snowmobile Council, are reminding snowmobile enthusiasts to follow a few guidelines to help ensure a safe snowmobile experience.

-Take a snowmobile safety course

-Don’t drink alcohol and drive

-Slow down to 55 mph at night

-Ride within your ability and experience

-Stop means stop, especially when crossing roads

-Stay to the right

-Only pass when appropriate and with extreme caution

-Respect the groomers

-Report trail hazards

In case of emergency call 911 and notify them of the nearest Trial Intersections Numbering System three-digit number. The TINS number can be found on the square brown sign located at most intersections and trail crossings. This may held emergency personnel determine the caller’s exact location and respond quicker.
