Northwoods National Cemetery opens for burials
Northwoods National Cemetery in Harshaw will begin providing burials for Veterans and eligible family members Oct. 26. The cemetery has a full array of interment options for both casket and cremated remains.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all committal services held at the cemetery will be limited to 50 or fewer participants and all attendees must wear masks. Masks will be provided by the cemetery to individuals that do not have them at the time of the service.
Northwoods National Cemetery is the second Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemetery in Wisconsin. Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee is the only other VA national cemetery in the state and is currently closed to first interments. Northwoods National Cemetery is part of the VA National Cemetery Administration Rural Burial Initiative program which provides access to VA burial benefits for veterans who reside in rural areas and who have not previously had reasonable access to a national or state veterans cemetery.
Located at 4520 Lakewood Road, the facility was dedicated Aug.14, 2020. The first phase of development contains 3,380 in-ground burial, columbaria niche and memorial sites.
