Play off bound: Hodag football to play River Falls Friday
Win and they are in, lose and go home until next season. The Hodags traveled to Ashland to take on the Oredockers on an October evening that was perfect for football. The Oredockers had not won a game all season after winning conference last year. The Hodags needed this game to become eligible for playoffs. They accomplished that feat. but not without some tense moments.
Rhinelander scored in the first quarter after Walker Hartman recovered an Oredocker fumble. The Hodags moved the ball down to the one. After a Drake Martin one-yard run and 2-point conversion the Hodags had an 8-0 lead. With 15 seconds left in the half Ashland scored, but failed on the 2-point conversion attempt. The Hodags took an 8-6 lead going into halftime.
The Hodags scored in the third quarter at the 8:03 mark on a long Walker Hartman run and the 2-point conversion attempt was good giving the Hodags a 16-6 lead. The Oredockers put a little pressure on the Hodags by scoring with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter. Ashland then attempted an on-side kick that was recovered by Caleb Olcikas. Quarterback Quinn Lamers and the rest of the Hodag offense were able to run out the clock and secure the win and a playoff berth. No. 6-seeded Rhinelander travels to River Falls Friday Oct. 25 to take on the No. 3 Falcons in the first level of playoffs.
