STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The No. 6-seeded Northern Edge girls hockey team saw its season come to an end Friday with a 3-1 loss in the WIAA tournament opener against the No. 3-seeded Fox Cities Stars at the Tri-County Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Fox Cities scored on the power play in the second period before adding another power-play goal about 3 minutes in the final period to make it 2-0.

The Northern Edge cut the deficit in half with a goal by Gwen Frederickson midway through the third period.

The Edge pulled its goalie with over 2 minutes left in regulation, and had some scoring opportunities to tie the game, but wasn’t able to find the back of the net as the Stars tacked on an empty-net goal in the final seconds to make it 3-1.

Northern Edge goalie Alicia Turunen stopped 46 of the 48 shots she faced in net.
