Eighth grade girls basketball finishes season in top five

FOR THE STAR JOURNAL
The eighth grade girls traveling basketball team placed fifth in the 32-team League Championship Tournament (LCT) Dec. 9-10 in Menomonie.
In preliminary pool play, the girls lost their first game to Bangor before winning against both LaCrosse Central and Neillsville. The Hodags made the top-16 round and defeated Cochrane-Fountain City, whom they had lost to at the same point in the tourney last year.
In the top-eight round on day two, the re-seeding had the Hodags play Bangor again and they were defeated. Bangor’s only loss in the tourney was to eventual champion Prairie du Chien. The Hodags responded well and defeated Esko, Minn. and Stevens Point to finish 5-2 for the tournament. The girls finished in 12th place the previous two seasons at the LCT.
