JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

In a seven-inning Legion baseball game Thursday night with only five hits between the two teams, the Rhinelander Rebels did all scoring in their 7-0 victory over Northwoods at Stafford Field.

Rebels starter Bryce Schickert pitched five shutout innings and recorded the win, allowing only one hit with a walk and a hit batter while striking out six. Relief pitcher Jacob DeMeyer retired all six batters he faced in the final two innings when he recorded five strikeouts.

Eagles starting pitcher Brad Sowinski went 4 2/3 innings in picking up the loss, giving up two earned runs out of the seven scored on four hits with four walks and two hit batters while striking out six.

In the field, Northwoods ended up with six errors, compared to none for the Rebels.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the first innings when DeMeyer and Brad Quade each walked and both scored on errors.

Two more runs scored for the Rebels in the bottom of the second when Kurt Zuiker walked, stole second and reached home on a double by Tyler Blomdahl, who then advanced to third on a sacrifice by Brandon Hess and crossed the plate after a passed ball.

Northwoods tallied its only hit in the third inning when Nathan Hopkins led off with a double. However, Hopkins could get no farther than second base before being tagged out at third.

DeMeyer extended the Rebels’ lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third when he led off with a single and ended up scoring on a fly ball to center field by Quade.

The Rebels plated their final two runs in the fifth inning when DeMeyer doubled, Brad Comer reached base on an error and both scored.

Prior to next week’s Regional Tournament the Rebels will be hosting, they have one more regular-season game scheduled for tonight at Tomahawk.
