STAR JOURNAL REPORT

A tie game at halftime turned into a lopsided loss for the Rhinelander High School varsity football team Friday when the Hodags were outscored 29-7 in the fourth quarter and fell at home in the season finale to Ashland, 48-23.

The Oredockers scored first with 5:14 left in the opening quarter when Wyatt O’Bey threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Zach Coffland. Ethan Graff added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Ashland pulled in front by two touchdowns with 4:54 before halftime when O’Bey threw a 23-yard scoring strike to Jordan Brennan. The lead remained at 13-0 after the extra point failed.

The Hodags scored twice in the final minute of the first half to tie the game. Logan Freund ran into the end zone from a yard away with 51 seconds left in the second quarter to cut Ashland’s lead to 13-6. Freund then threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Logan Wild with 2 seconds before halftime. Gunnar Millot’s extra point tied the game at 13-13.

The Oredockers regained the lead with 6:55 to play in the third quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass from O’Bey to Dakota Craig. Ashland’s lead remained at 19-13 after the extra point failed.

RHS then cut the Oredockers’ lead to 3 points with 1:57 left in the third quarter when Millot made a 30-yard field goal.

The first 5 minutes of the fourth quarter were all Ashland when the Oredockers scored three rushing touchdowns with O’Bey finding the end zone from 5 yards away and Brandon Rusch tallying a pair of scoring runs of 9 and 56 yards.

The Hodags’ final points came with 4:17 left in the game when Freund threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Zarda and Millot added the extra point.

Ashland closed out the scoring with 1:54 to play in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Brennan to Craig and an extra point from Graff.

RHS, which didn’t win a Great Northern Conference game for the third year in a row, ended the season 0-6 in league play and 2-7 overall, also missing out on the postseason with a record below .500.
