Business Close-up: Forth Floral has everything for spring planting

When you walk through the doors at Forth Floral, a million creative possibilities open up.

Ruth and Henning Hempel own this business and, in fact, Ruth is the third generation of the family to work at Forth Floral which was started by her grandparents close to 100 years ago. And it’s easy to see why this floral shop and greenhouse have been so successful over the years and have become part of the fabric of Rhinelander.

The floral shop offers many unique and interesting home décor items as well as a big cooler filled with fresh flowers and arrangements which can be picked up or delivered. There is also a selection of silk flowers as well as a wide selection of flowering plants to choose from.

This weekend is prom at many area schools and the Hempel’s are busy creating corsages and boutonnieres for these traditional dances. All are custom made and there are many unique and fun embellishments for these flowers. Students and their families are welcome to come in and see examples and choose color and flower choices of their own.

The florists here are very knowledgeable when it comes to wedding flowers as well. From simple wildflower bouquets to ornate arrangements, all are available at Forth Floral. For those wanting to send sympathy wishes, funeral arrangements can also be selected and delivered to local funeral homes. Any occasion can be celebrated with flowers including birthdays, anniversaries and promotions and Forth Floral has many options to choose from.

In addition to beautiful fresh flowers, there are also multiple greenhouses where plants of every description bloom and thrive. Houseplants are abundant here as well as such tropicals as lemon and lime trees, weeping fig plants and much more. In addition, there are lots of blooming plants available such as azaleas, kalachoes, violets and hydrangeas to name a few.

In a few short weeks, Forth Floral will also have many gardening and bedding plants for sale. Container gardening has become very popular and there are lots of planters ready to go or visitors are welcome to design their own pot of flowering plants. Popular garden specimens such as geraniums, petunias and impatiens are available in addition to many different types of hanging baskets.

Henning is busy right now growing thousands of vegetable plants. Once again the popular grafted tomato plants will be offered this year as well as other favorites such as peppers, broccoli, cabbage and eggplant to name a few. There is a large seed selection available as well as plant and gardening solutions for pests and plant care.
New this year are some unique old-fashioned garden chairs made by the Torrans Company. These chairs are not only functional and comfortable but also a throwback to yesteryear when this type of outdoor furniture brought families and friends together over cool glasses of lemonade and lively conversations. They come in a wide variety of bright colors and are sure to add a touch of nostalgia wherever they are placed.

Forth Floral is located at 410 N. Brown St. in Rhinelander. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will also be open Sunday during the gardening season. The web address is www.forthfloral.com  and they are also on Facebook. The phone number is 715-362-7600.
