Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest delays opening of campgrounds and recreation trails
The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) will be delaying the opening of recreation trails and campgrounds due to persisting snow and wet conditions.
Visitors are encouraged to check the website at www.fs.usda.gov/cnnf or call the District Offices to check on opening dates. Officials recognize this is an issue for visitors and are working to get the campgrounds open as soon as possible.
Recreational trails across the CNNF will also be opening later than usual. All trails will be closed due to the snow pack and wet conditions until approximately May 22. Trails on the Lakewood-Laona District are expected to open May 15 if conditions allow.
Conditions for campgrounds and trails will be assessed on a regular basis and updated on the website. If there are changes allowing for earlier openings the public will be notified.
“We ask for everyone’s understanding with the delay again this year. Every year we work hard to get all of the campgrounds open in time for the opening of fishing season, unfortunately Mother Nature is not cooperating again. We know this can make it hard for visitors to plan ahead and for local businesses to benefit from visitor use of the National Forest. We will keep our website up-to-date on the status of our recreation areas,” Paul Strong, Forest Supervisor, said.
To check on the latest status of campgrounds and recreational trails go to www.fs.usda.gov/cnnf or follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/CNNF002, or call the local District Office in the area.
