About 350 Northwoods 8th graders will converge on the Nicolet College campus Wednesday, Oct. 10, for the Heavy Metal Tour. The event, created in partnership with area manufacturers, Grow North Regional Economic Development Corporation and the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, will introduce the students to careers in manufacturing and the trades.

“It’s going to be a great event which will give students a solid understanding of possible careers in these fields and also give them a good idea of the training necessary to qualify for these jobs,” said Teri Phalin, PK-16 Admissions coordinator at Nicolet.

Along with touring Nicolet labs and classrooms, students will also visit a number of area manufacturers that include Superior Diesel, Oldenburg Group, ABX, NEX, Hypro and Northstar Steel.

Representatives from Wausau Paper, Printpak and Hypro will give presentations to the students on the Nicolet Campus about the many different career paths available to them in manufacturing.

Schools districts sending 8th graders to the event include Tomahawk, Rhinelander, Northland Pines, Lac du Flambeau, Wabeno, Arbor-Vitae-Woodruff, Elcho, Crandon, Laona and Mercer.

The rock band Loose Change will play during lunch.
