Business Close-Up: Everything Harley

If you’re a Harley Davidson fan, and even if you’re not, it’s worth the trip to visit Northern Lights, Harley-Davidson in Arbor Vitae. Operated by General Manager Doug Klumb, this spacious and beautiful retail store has a little something for everyone, and a lot for those who love the deep rumble of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The retail store itself is filled with everything Harley-Davidson. T-shirts of every color and size are offered, as well as the signature leather apparel Harley riders are known for. Hats, caps, glassware, boots, sweatshirts, accessories, gloves, coffee mugs, playing cards and even pet toys are just some of the Harley themed items offered at Northern Lights.

Of course, motorcycles of every style and size are also sold here. Doug has more than 60 models to choose from, from brand new to pre-owned bikes. He also takes trade-ins of any model or make for those looking to join the Harley family. “We get lots of customers who come in to better their lives by getting a Harley,” said Doug with a laugh. If a particular model is not on the showroom floor, Doug and his crew will happily search their vast database to find that perfect motorcycle no matter what the order. Another service offered here is motorcycle rental.

“This is perfect for those looking to get into the sport and want to experience what’s it’s like riding a Harley,” Doug said.

For those who are already happy Harley owners, Northern Lights provides everything needed to keep that investment in top running order. There are two Harley PHD’s on staff (this means Professional Harley-Davidson technician) who have taken Harley-Davidson training in Milwaukee. These technicians are skilled and trained in servicing every make of Harley whether that means maintenance or repairs. The service department on the premises is clean and orderly and the technicians are more than happy to answer any questions. In addition, Doug has a Dynamometer on the premises and this can be used to calculate horsepower and fine tune computer calibrations.

“The dyno has also been used as a simulator for inexperienced riders,” said Doug. “It gives prospective riders a feel for what it’s like to ride a Harley without having to worry about traffic.”

In addition to the Service Department, there is also a high tech paint booth. Colors of every hue are offered so Harley riders can customize their bikes in any way they choose. “We have a lot of different colors on hand and we can mix colors to a customer’s specifications also,” said Doug. Paint work is a popular service, especially while bikes are laid up for the winter.

Because Doug himself is a dedicated Harley owner and rider (he put on over 12,000 miles last year) he offers his facility for several events throughout the year. Tent sales offering discounted Harley items, and “garage parties” where people can get a feel for these machines are popular favorites. Doug and his crew also host the Northern Lights Chapter of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and enjoy and welcome all the camaraderie this organization has to offer.

Northern Lights is located at 1700 Hwy. 51 N in Arbor Vitae. This store has summer hours and winter ones as well. In the winter the store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the summer, the store is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. On Saturday during the summer months the store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
