The Vilas County sheriff's office has announced that the male driver killed in a one-vehicle crash in Phelps late last month has been identified as Carter Wiegand, 31, of Rhinelander.
According to a sheriff's office press release, a 911 call was received just before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29 reporting a single vehicle crash on Highway 17 near Hansen Hill Road in the Town of Phelps. "The caller observed a truck in the ditch that had struck a tree", the release said. "The first arriving deputy observed the
vehicle to be occupied by one male driver that was not breathing."
Wiegand was pronounced deceased at the scene. Law enforcement did not immediately release his name to allow time for notification of family members.
