The Rhinelander High School girls basketball team turned a close defensive battle into a commanding victory Friday night, defeating Northland Pines 58-40 in the first game of a doubleheader at Northland Pines. The contest started as a defensive slugfest, with both teams struggling to find their offensive rhythm. The lead changed hands multiple times through the early going before Rhinelander seized control at the 8-minute mark of the first half, taking an 11-10 advantage they would never relinquish.
The turning point came in the final minute of the opening half. With Rhinelander clinging to an 18-14 lead and just 33 seconds remaining, junior Aubryn Clark sparked a remarkable personal run that would swing the momentum decisively in the Hodags’ favor.
Clark was fouled and calmly sank both free throws. On the ensuing inbound play, she was fouled again before the ball was even put in play, stepping back to the line to convert two more charity shots. Moments later, Clark read a Pines pass perfectly, picked off a steal in the lane, and raced the length of the court for an uncontested layup.
In a breathtaking 33-second span, Clark had personally scored six points, ballooning Rhinelander’s lead to 24-14 at halftime. The Hodags wasted no time putting the game away in the second half. Rhinelander opened with another scoring surge that pushed their advantage into the 20-point range, where it would remain for most of the final period.
Senior Vivian Lamers led all scorers with 22 points, matching her career high, while the Clark sisters provided a formidable 1-2 punch. Aubryn finished with 13 points, and her sister Teagan added 13 of her own in the balanced Hodag attack.
The victory showcased Rhinelander’s ability to turn up the defensive pressure at crucial moments while finding their offensive touch when it mattered most. The Hodags will look to build on this momentum in their next outing.
