The Oneida County Health Department is urging residents to get their flu shots now that the vaccine is available, both through walk-in hours at its Rhinelander office and through a slate of community clinics scheduled across the county through November.
Flu vaccine has been available at OCHD, 100 W. Keenan St., since Monday, Sept. 14. No appointment is necessary; walk-in hours run Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. COVID vaccine is expected to be available soon, and the health department said updates will be posted to its website and social media accounts.
Flu season typically runs from October to May, with activity peaking between December and February, according to the health department. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting vaccinated as soon as the shot is available, for a few reasons:
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body to build up antibodies, so early vaccination means earlier protection. People planning fall or winter travel may also want to get the shot early enough to be protected during their trip. And because antibodies from the previous season wane over time, and flu viruses can change from year to year, yearly vaccination is necessary regardless of past exposure.
Residents can also get vaccinated closer to home through community clinics the health department is holding in towns throughout Oneida County.
