The Rhinelander High School boys soccer team opened its season with a win Tuesday, Aug. 25 before dropping its home opener to Kingsford on Thursday, Aug. 27, giving the Hodags a 1-1 record through two games.
The Hodags matched their win total from a season ago in the opener, holding off Washburn 2-1 inside the Hodag Dome as a thunderstorm rolled through outside. Rhinelander won just one game all of last season.
Charlie Johnson scored twice to lead the offense, while the Hodag defense held Washburn to a single goal. The go-ahead goal came on a header off a corner kick from Asher Rivord.
Two days later, the Hodags’ good start was cut short as Kingsford visited and handed Rhinelander its first loss of the season, 4-1. The Flivvers controlled possession for much of the match, outshooting the Hodags 47-6.
Kingsford built a 3-0 lead in the first half before adding another goal in the second.
The Hodags’ lone goal came on a first-half breakaway by Aidan Lueder, set up by a pass from Asher Rivord.
Caden Ehrhardt started in goal for Rhinelander and turned in 14 saves.
