Hodag Highlights: Rhinelander falls 41-14 at Mosinee, loses two key players to injury

The Rhinelander High School football team’s momentum from their Bell Game victory over Antigo last week came to an abrupt halt Friday night as they fell 41-14 to Mosinee in the Indians’ homecoming game.
Rhinelander stayed competitive early, trailing just 7-0 after the first quarter despite penetrating inside the Mosinee 20-yard line on their first two possessions. But the Hodags couldn’t capitalize on either opportunity, setting the tone for a frustrating night.
Mosinee quarterback Treve Stoffel proved unstoppable, rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score through the air. The Indians’ defense contributed as well, returning an interception 36 yards for a touchdown as Rhinelander quarterback Abe Gretzinger was picked off three times in the game. The Hodags trailed 14-0 at halftime before breaking through with a third-quarter touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7. However, Mosinee responded with three unanswered scores in the period to take a commanding 35-7 lead into the fourth quarter. Both teams found the end zone once more in the final frame, with Rhinelander’s Caden Sieker blocking an extra point attempt. The loss came at a steep price for the Hodags. Cyrus Leisure left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury, while Sieker suffered a shoulder injury later in the contest.
Rhinelander will look to rebound next week when they host Medford at Mike Webster Stadium.
