The Rhinelander High School boys basketball team won a non-conference contest in impressive fashion Monday, using a dominant second-half performance to pull away from Ashland for a 75-41 victory.
The game remained competitive through much of the first half, with the Hodags trailing for stretches before finding their rhythm. Rhinelander closed the half strong, going on a run to build a 33-25 advantage heading into the break.
The second half belonged entirely to the visitors. Rhinelander switched to a zone defense to capitalize on their length, and the adjustment proved devastating. The Hodags forced numerous turnovers that translated into easy transition baskets while limiting the Oredockers to just 16 points after halftime. Meanwhile, Rhinelander’s offense caught fire, pouring in 53 second-half points to turn a close game into a comfortable 34-point victory.
Devon Feck led all scorers with 19 points to pace the balanced Rhinelander attack. Abe Gretzinger added 14 points in the win, while Jatyn Barkus also reached double figures with 15 points.
The Hodags continued their strong play into conference action Friday, defeating Medford 71-57 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium to open Great Northern Conference play with a victory. Abe Gretzinger led the scoring effort against the Raiders with 23 points.
Rhinelander will look to build on their two-game winning streak when both the boys and girls teams travel to Antigo on Friday for a conference doubleheader against the Red Robins.
