The Rhinelander High School girls swim team wrapped up another outstanding season Saturday, placing third at the WIAA Division 2 State Swimming and Diving Championships for the second year in a row.
The Hodags brought seven swimmers to the state meet with 14 entries and made their presence felt throughout the competition, finishing with 202.5 points to edge fourth-place Shorewood by just 5.5 points. Whitefish Bay captured the state title with 382 points, while Madison Edgewood finished second with 274.
Rhinelander’s relay teams led the way, with all three squads earning top-four finishes. The 200-yard medley relay of Kiley Pooch, Ella Heck, Camilla Gruett and June Chiamulera got things started strong with a second-place finish to open the meet.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Vivian Lamers, Chiamulera, Heck and Rylee Mickevicius placed third, while the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Pooch, Mickevicius, Gruett and Lamers added a fourth-place finish.
Lamers turned in two stellar individual performances, taking second in the 100-yard freestyle by out-touching the third-place swimmer from Sauk Prairie by just .01 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing .02 seconds ahead of Antigo’s Holland Tainter, who had defeated her at both the conference and sectional meets.
Heck contributed crucial points with a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and an 11th-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle. Gruett claimed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, while Mickevicius was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle and 12th in the 100-yard butterfly.
Pooch finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke and tied for 12th in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Emma Houg capped her high school career with 13th-place finishes in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke.
