The Rhinelander High School boys hockey team faced a challenging week at home, dropping a conference contest to Antigo last Tuesday and a non-conference matchup against Ashland on Saturday.
Tuesday vs. Antigo
The Hodags battled the Red Robins to a 1-1 tie through two periods before Antigo pulled away in the third for a 4-1 victory.
Jack Turek scored the lone goal for Rhinelander in the second period, knotting the score at 1-1 heading into the final frame. However, Antigo erupted for three unanswered goals in the third period to secure the conference win.
Saturday vs. Ashland
The visiting Oredockers jumped out to an early lead in the first period, but Rhinelander responded quickly. Drake Nelson found the back of the net on a deflection from a Logan Leonard shot to tie the game at 1-1. The momentum would be short-lived, however, as Ashland scored twice more before the end of the opening period to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The Oredockers continued to pour it on in the second period, adding three more goals to extend their advantage. Ashland tacked on one more goal in the third period to complete the 7-1 victory.
The Hodags will close out their conference schedule on Tuesday when they travel to Lakeland.
