Hodag Highlights: Rebels fall in Legion regional title game

Posted

The Rhinelander Rebels wrapped up their season with a runner-up finish at the American Legion regional baseball tournament held Thursday through Sunday in Minocqua.
Rhinelander opened play Thursday with a 10-6 win over Merrill, with Jackson Waydick picking up the victory on the mound.
On Friday, the Rebels faced Northwoods and held a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning. However, Northwoods rallied for three runs, aided by Rebel defensive miscues, and handed Rhinelander its first loss. Vince White pitched a strong game but was tagged with the loss.
The Rebels entered the elimination bracket Saturday, starting with a morning matchup against host Minocqua. With the season on the line, Dylan Vanderbunt earned the win as Rhinelander eliminated Lakeland 11-2.
Later that day, the Rebels had a rematch against Northwoods. Connor Rappley started the game, throwing three innings and 50 pitches. Sawyer Bishop took over for the fourth and fifth innings. The Rebels dominated, winning 13-0 in five innings.
The victory sent Rhinelander to Sunday’s championship round against undefeated Medford. The Rebels needed back-to-back wins to advance to state but fell short. Medford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and continued to pour on runs, defeating Rhinelander 11-0 in five innings. Waydick broke up a Medford no-hitter in the fourth with a single up the middle — the Rebels’ lone hit of the game.
Antigo and Merrill were both eliminated Friday after going 0-2 in tournament play.
