The Rhinelander High School girls basketball team opened Great Northern Conference play last week with a pair of tough losses, falling to Mosinee on Tuesday, Dec. 2 before dropping a hard-fought contest to Medford on Friday.
Tuesday’s matchup with Mosinee saw the Hodags build a promising 21-14 halftime advantage, but the second half proved challenging as the visiting Indians dominated the final 18 minutes. Mosinee outscored Rhinelander 29-11 after the break to claim a 43-32 victory and hand the Hodags their first conference loss. Aubryn Clark paced the Rhinelander offense with 10 points, while Teagan Clark added 10 and Vivian Lamers contributed 7 in the losing effort.
Friday brought another difficult test as the Hodags opened a girls-boys doubleheader against Medford. Once again, Rhinelander found themselves in an early hole, trailing 23-12 at halftime as the offense struggled to find rhythm in the opening half.
The second half told a different story. The Hodags came out with renewed energy and intensity, matching Medford nearly point-for-point with a 23-22 advantage after the break. However, the first-half deficit proved too large to overcome as Medford held on for a 45-35 victory.
The Raiders’ size presented problems all evening for Rhinelander, with Medford’s height advantage leading to numerous altered and blocked shots that disrupted the Hodags’ offensive flow.
Aubryn Clark exploded for a game-high 21 points to lead all scorers, while Vivian Lamers added 10 and Teagan Clark chipped in 6 points in the defeat.
The Hodags will look to bounce back when they host the Antigo Red Robins on Friday in their next conference matchup.
