The Rhinelander High School girls basketball team put an end to years of frustration Tuesday night, Jan. 14, defeating the Lakeland Thunderbirds 53-29 in the first game of a girls-boys doubleheader at Lakeland High School.
The Hodags entered the contest knowing they had a genuine opportunity to change the narrative after falling to Lakeland in both matchups each season for the past several years.
Despite Lakeland’s continued height advantage, which resulted in several blocked Rhinelander shots, the Hodags held a 28-21 lead at halftime in a competitive first half.
The second half told a different story entirely. Rhinelander made defensive adjustments that stifled the Thunderbirds’ offense, limiting Lakeland to just eight points over the final two quarters while the Hodags added 25 points to pull away for the 24-point victory.
Aubryn Clark led all scorers with 20 points, contributing 10 in each half. Teagan Clark and Vivian Lamers provided balanced support with 13 points apiece.
