The Hodag Babe Ruth prep baseball team surged past Eagle River on Wednesday, July 9 using a dominant third inning to secure a 15-5 victory in five innings via the 10-run rule.
Eagle River jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first and another in the second. The Hodags responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the third, Rhinelander exploded for eight runs, taking a commanding 9-2 lead. Eagle River added three more in the top of the fourth, but the Hodags countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 14-5.
Jaxon West pitched a scoreless fifth inning for the Hodags, keeping Eagle River off the board and setting the stage for the walk-off frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Finn Brown was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to Ben Gehrmann. A wild pitch sent Brown to third, and he crossed the plate on a groundout by Collin Jorata to secure the 15-5 win.
The game ended with one out in the fifth, as the Hodags clinched the victory under the 10-run mercy rule
