Hodag Highlights: Harriers excel at state cross country meet

Posted

Three Rhinelander High School junior cross country runners competed at the Division 2 state meet Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids, with all three posting strong performances against fields of 150 competitors in each race.
The boys’ race saw significant improvements from returning state qualifiers. Avrom Barr led the Hodags with a 41st-place finish, crossing the line in 17:00.6. The junior improved on his 2023 performance, when he placed 44th with a time of 17:13.4.
Jackson Weinzatl also showed marked progress in his second trip to state. Weinzatl finished 83rd with a time of 17:48.1, shaving nearly 30 seconds off last year’s time of 18:17 and moving up 31 places from his 114th-place finish as a sophomore.
In the girls’ race, junior Macy Myers exceeded her own expectations with a 32nd-place finish in 19:59.1. Myers had set a goal of placing in the top 100, making her top-35 performance a pleasant surprise.
The strong showings by all three runners cap successful seasons for the Rhinelander cross country program and set up the trio for their senior campaigns next fall.
