Devon Feck scored 49 points over two games this week, including 14 three-pointers, as the Rhinelander boys basketball team defeated Wausau West 61-38 on Tuesday, Dec. 16 and Northland Pines 60-55 on Friday to remain undefeated in conference play.
Tuesday's matchup against Wausau West featured a family rivalry as Rhinelander's Derek Lemmens and West's Nate Lemmens faced each other for the 12th time in their prep coaching careers. Derek entered the game leading the series 7-4.
After Wausau West jumped out to an 8-0 lead, the Hodags responded with a 13-0 run of their own to take control. Rhinelander built a commanding 33-18 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Feck erupted for a career-high 25 points, connecting on seven of eight three-point attempts. Jatyn Barkus added 11 points for the Hodags, who improved Derek Lemmens' record against his brother to 8-4.
Friday night brought a showdown between two unbeaten conference teams as the Hodags hosted the Northland Pines Eagles.
Feck continued his torrid shooting, draining another seven three-pointers en route to 24 points. Rhinelander led 34-26 at halftime, but the Eagles battled back in the second half and the game became a back-and-forth affair.
The Hodags seized control down the stretch with a defensive stand that held Northland Pines without a field goal over the final four minutes to secure the victory.
Abe Gretzinger contributed 11 points and Rowan Wiczek added nine for Rhinelander.
The Hodags will return to action Dec. 30 when they host Waupaca.
