Hodag highlights: Boys hoops rolls past Waupaca, improves to 7-1

Posted

The Rhinelander High School boys basketball team continued its strong start to the season Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30, defeating the Waupaca Comets 69-44 in a non-conference matchup at home.
The Hodags (7-1, 3-0 Great Northern Conference) jumped out to an early lead, but Waupaca battled back and began closing the gap midway through the first half. Rhinelander’s defensive adjustments proved to be the difference maker, as a switch to a zone defense sparked several turnovers that led to easy transition baskets. The momentum shift allowed the Hodags to take a 29-20 advantage into halftime.
Jatyn Barkus paced Rhinelander’s balanced offensive attack with a game-high 16 points, converting seven field goals and adding two free throws. Abe Gretzinger also reached double figures with 12 points, while Evan Shoeder contributed 11 points, including the team’s only three-pointer of the opening half. Shoeder had seven points in the first half as the Hodags built their lead.
Rhinelander pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Comets 40-24 to secure the 25-point victory.
The Hodags were scheduled to travel to Tomahawk January 6 to take on the Hatchets. That game took place after this edition went to press.
