Shawano
The Hodag girls and boys basketball teams played the Shawano Hawks at home on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The night was also a support night for Hudson Roberts, the son of Luke and Emma Roberts, who was born just after Christmas and was recently diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
The girls played first and offensively could not get much going as Shawano’s division one recruit, 6’2” Leah Nordin, created problems on both ends of the court.
The Hodags were down 25-12 at the half and lost 52-23.
Defensively, the Hodags held Nordin below her season average in points.
The high scorer for the Hodags was Vivian Lamers, with nine points.
The second game of the night had the Hodag boys playing the Shawano Hawks.
The Hodags started slow but, by the end of the first half, went on a little run and held a 23-17 lead.
The defense turned up the pressure, forced numerous turnovers, and did not allow Shawano many open looks at the basket.
The Hodags outscored the Hawks 26-17 in the second half for the 49-34 win.
Leading the way for the Hodags wereDevon Feck with 11 points, all in the second half, and Evan Shoeder, also with 11 points.
LakelandOn Friday, Feb. 14, the Lakeland High School gym, home of the Thunderbirds, was the site of a basketball doubleheader, with the girls playing against the conference champs first, followed by the boy’s game.
The height of the Lakeland girls and pressure defense caused the Hodags to make turnovers and an inability to get shots off.
The T-Birds opened the scoring and never trailed as they had a 45-5 lead at the half and won with a 70-15 score.
The leading scorer for the Hodags was Kelsey Winter, who scored six points. The conference’s leading scorer, Kristina Ouimette, led the T-Birds with 28 points.
The second game on Friday night had the boys playing. The Hodags won by a 70-30 score in Rhinelander, and the boys were hoping for a similar outcome. Lakeland had other ideas, played good defense, and made shots. The Hodags had a 27-20 halftime lead.
The game stayed close throughout the second half as the Thunderbirds outscored the Hodags by two points, and the Hodags won 62-57.
At the end of the game, the T-Birds fouled to put Rhinelander at the free-throw line to hopefully have the Hodags miss the shots and allow the home team to gain ground.
The Hodags made enough shots to keep the lead and take home a win.
Devon Feck was the game-high scorer with 21 points with a field goal and two threes, and he added 13 points on free throws, making all of his shots from the line.
Truman Lamers scored 16 points, and Evan Shoeder put in 12 points.
