Junior Avrom Barr captured individual honors and led a strong Rhinelander High School contingent at the Great Northern Conference cross country championship Saturday at Northwood Golf Club. Barr ran stride-for-stride with Lakeland’s Charlie Ernst for most of the race before pulling away in the final stretch to claim first place and earn conference runner of the year honors.
The Hodags’ depth was on full display as six boys runners earned all-conference recognition. Jackson Weinzatl placed fifth to join Barr on the first team all-conference squad. Jonathon Campbell and Michael Brunette both earned second team all-conference honors, while Grant Gremban and Ayden Myers received honorable mention recognition. Despite the impressive individual performances, the Rhinelander boys fell just short in the team standings, finishing second to Lakeland by a single point in a tight conference race.
On the girls side, the Hodags placed third as a team with two runners earning first team all-conference accolades. Macy Myers finished fourth overall, while Kara Monk took sixth place to round out Rhinelander’s top performers.
Both teams now turn their attention to the sectional meet, scheduled for Friday in Merrill, where they’ll look to advance to the state championship.
