Rhinelander DECA students compete at districts
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
Rhinelander High School students competed against 500 others at the DECA district competition Jan. 10, in Wisconsin Rapids. Of the 23 students who participated, five individuals and three teams of two were awarded with a medal or plaque. Seventeen Rhinelander students will be moving on to the state competition in March.
The team of Valerie Dalka and Carmen Ibarra earned three medals in the Hospitality Team Decision Making category and they each also took home medals for the economics test, which was required of all participants.
Abbey Henrichs and Gwyneth Lowry (Buying and Merchandising) won three medals; Henrichs also medaled for the economic test. Makenzie Denny (Quick Service Restaurant) finished in second place while earning two medals in the process.
Individual medal winners include Lilli Bishop (Personal Financial Literacy), Alexis Engelking (Sports & Entertainment Marketing) and Izzy Havekampf (Accounting). The team of Ashleigh Hull and Kaylee Roberts (Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making) was also awarded a medal.
DECA competitions fall into one of four clusters: marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Within those clusters are more specific events that deal with a more specific career field in that cluster. For example, the accounting event falls under the finance cluster. Competitors studied throughout the month of December and went to study sessions to get the highest score they could, which consists of the economics test and three other aspects: a career cluster test, and two role plays.
