Nokomis senior dining program in need of help to stay open
A volunteer Meals on Wheels (MOWs) driver and a kitchen volunteer are needed at the Nokomis senior meal site. According to county Transportation and Nutrition Coordinator Mary Boyer, meals are served every Monday and Wednesday at the Nokomis Town Hall. A driver(s) is needed for both days and a kitchen helper for at least the Monday meal service. We are also advertising for a site manager at this site.
Activity at the dining site starts around 9 a.m., when preparation begins for receiving catered-in food, setting up individual meals for delivery and serving a group of diners at the site. The meal driver leaves to deliver MOWs about 10:40 a.m., and the congregate diners are served at 11:30 a.m. Work is generally finished between 12:30-1 p.m.
Meal drivers can receive mileage for the meal route at the federal allowable rate of 53.5 cents per mile. All volunteers over 55 sign up with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program which provides some extra benefits to volunteers, including a tax exemption on the mileage reimbursement. There are also volunteer escort driving opportunities available with the Oneida County Department on Aging. This is mainly for medical appointments and pays the same mileage rate, beginning from the driver’s home.
