Wood Art and Ticks at Kemp Station
The Kemp Natural Resources Station in Woodruff will offer two educational opportunities in early July.
Participants will have an opportunity to make a wood ink pen with UW-Madison Professor of Wood Products, Scott Bowe. Each session will last about one hour.
Participants will learn the basics of wood turning, discuss common wood properties, turn and assemble a wood pen, and get to keep the pen they create.
Participants should be 12 years of age or older. Individual appointments are available at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 8, July 9 and July 10.
On Wednesday, July 9, at 7 p.m., UW-Madison Professor Susan Paskewitz will discuss Wisconsin ticks and tick-bourne disease. Wisconsinites are well aware of the presence of deer ticks and the epidemic of Lyme Disease in the state.
Other diseases, including human anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, human babesiosis and illness due to deer tick virus are not as well-known but are on the increase.
New tick species, especially the Lone Star tick, are showing up more frequently. Dr. Paskewitz will speak on the changing patterns of tick-borne disease in the state and discuss her research on the factors affecting the abundance and distribution of ticks and disease-causing microbes.
She will talk about methods for controlling the ticks and reducing the risk of exposure to disease. Finally, she’ll provide up to date information about how the density and infection rates of deer ticks in Oneida County compare with other places in the state.
