Manufacturing career open house at Nicolet College
Anyone interested in a career in manufacturing can learn about the field at the Manufacturing Career Open House Tuesday, May 20, at Nicolet College.
Those interested in either the Electromechanical or Industrial Mechanical field can visit between 4 and 7 p.m. in the college’s Manufacturing Lab located in Art Tech Center 206.
Nicolet offers a range of academic credentials in the field, ranging from short-term certificates to two-year associate degrees.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in Manufacturing to see what it takes to start a rewarding career in this field,” Brigitte Kumbier, dean of Trade and Industry at Nicolet, said. “These jobs pay well and people with the right skills are in high demand at manufacturing facilities across the Northwoods.”
At the open house individuals will be able to tour Nicolet’s Manufacturing Lab, meet with instructors, and talk with Nicolet staff about the admissions process, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
The open house will focus on two manufacturing tracks. The Electromechanical Technician track teaches students how to install, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade electronic and computer-controlled mechanical systems, such as automated assembly machines. The skill set required combines knowledge of mechanical engineering technology with knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits.
The Industrial Mechanical Technician tracks focuses more on the mechanics of manufacturing machinery. Instruction covers mechanical drive systems, power transmission components, material handling techniques, hydraulics/pneumatics, welding, lubrication systems, piping, basic electrical concepts, electrical motor controls, and programmable logic controls.
It’s common for graduates with a two-year associate degree in either of these programs to enter the workforce in the Northwoods with jobs that pay $35,000 to $40,000 a year or more, Kumbier said.
