Summer Discovery series offers classes for children
A number of classes for children will be offered this June, July and August at Nicolet College. Kids may pick from 28 different offerings that range in time from several hours to multiple days. Classes will be held on the Nicolet Campus south of Rhinelander and at the college’s Lakeland Center in Minocqua.

College Camp
From Aug. 5 to 8, local 6th through 8th graders will explore a wide variety of different careers. Classes include Engineering Your Future, CSI: Criminal Justice, World Foods, Welding for Fun, Sew Fabulous Fashion and Slightly Singed Science, to name a few. Each class runs between 1 and 4:15 p.m. each day. Orientation is on Monday, Aug. 5, and will begin at 12:30 p.m.
The cost to attend is $75 for the four days and an additional $30 if transportation is needed.
Specialty Camps
Aug. 19 to 22 will be devoted to video game development for kids ages 10 to 15. Students in Video Game Designers Wanted will learn how to create arcade-style games and how to control characters, objects and outcomes from 9 a.m. to noon in Northwoods Center 110.
From 1 to 4 p.m. in the same room, students in Alien Invaders Video Game Making will create computer-generated aliens and learn how to modify difficulty levels. The cost for each session is $114.
The Junior Engineering 2 Camp will have kids ages 6 to 9 making a variety of contraptions such as ping pong ball throwers and Ferris wheels while utilizing a number of engineering concepts. The Collision Cars Camp will demonstrate how to build a variety of battling machines such as ArmBots and BladeBots while learning elements of theoretical risk-taking and engineering principles.
Kids Classes
A variety of kids classes are offered throughout the summer. Some popular classes include:
The Hungry Caterpillar will have kids ages 5 to 8 frosting and decorating a dessert as the instructor reads the popular children’s story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The cost to attend is $12.
Cool Creative Cupcakes and Cookies class that allows 7- to 12-year-olds to explore a number of decorating techniques. The class is $21 and will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, June 15.
Kids Kayak with a Twist teaches kids to kayak and also introduces them to the sport of stand-up paddleboarding. The Parents with Kids session is for children ages 3 to 6 and will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 18, on Vandercook Lake in Arbor Vitae. The cost is $25 and includes use of a kayak, paddleboard and snacks.
