Our Turn: What a play
We are in the high school play called Cinderella. The wacky thing about that is that we are in eighth grade. We both have been in lots of middle school plays but never something this fantastic. We are working with lots of amazing people, like our director Ms. Larsen, our chorus director Ms. Wattlet, set designer Steve Richardson and Michelle Bryski, our choreographer. Cinderella was played by Mirilla, the prince was played by Ryan and the stepmother was played by Kaya. Faith, who is also in eighth grade, was a mouse and dancer. They have all been working their butts off to get it all done. We started working on it about half a month into school. Most of our practices were on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
At the first rehearsal for the play, everyone was making mistakes. We were having chorus rehearsals and we did the same dance over and over. Then we had to put it all together. We all made at least one mistake. But now we are just tweaking small things like where to stand and what to do if this happens or that happens. We had our first dress rehearsal on November 27.
The high schoolers are really helpful. When we have a question about costumes or a dance, we can ask them for help. They also give us tips to help us get better at acting. At first it was kind of awkward, but then we made some friends and now we all know one another.
One of our favorite parts of the play is the ballroom scene. Right before Cinderella walks in, we are all dancing with the prince. The king and queen are sitting in their chairs and admiring all of the lovely girls. Another favorite part is when the stepmother screams at the mice.
The reasons that we like being in drama are that we get to tell a story and become another person. It’s a chance to become someone different, to see what it is like to be someone else. And you get to maybe sing if it’s a musical.
After the play was done, we had closure by cleaning up everything. It took about an hour to get it all done, but it was worth it. We were sad for it to end. Most of the seniors were crying at one point or another. All in all, it was an amazing experience.
