NATH awarded 2012 WHEDA grant
NATH Executive Director, Tammy Modic, was recently informed that the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) awarded a grant of $25,000 to NATH through the Persons-In-Crisis Housing Program, Emergency Transitional Category. The grant is designated for the installation of a handicap access on the east entrance of Frederick Place from street level.
The 2012 WHEDA Foundation housing grant competition attracted 49 applicants. NATH is one of twenty-five organizations that will share $500,000 in grant funds to create or improve approximately 894 beds/units statewide. Results of the 2012 grant program have been posted online at wheda.com
The NATH Facilities Committee, chaired by Jule Henry, anticipates that work will begin on the handicap access this fall. The new entrance will allow persons with mobility issues to more easily enter Frederick Place.
NATH continues to seek state and federal grant and foundation funds in addition to hosting local fundraising events and seeking corporate and individual financial support in order to continue to provide emergency, temporary housing for those experiencing homelessness in the Northwoods. The Grants Committee has learned that the current economic situation have decreased the number of grant sources. Many foundations and grants fund capital projects but do not fund operating expenses.
NATH budgets $205,000 annually to operate Frederick Place. Operating funds provide housing, food, 24-hour staff, case management, utilities, insurance, supplies, and facility maintenance. Operating costs equate to approximately $14 per resident per day. Support from individuals, businesses, faith communities, civic groups and other organizations from throughout NATH’s five-county service area has been a major factor in the success of Frederick Place. The NATH Board of Directors deeply appreciates all of the community support that continues to provide for our Northwoods neighbors in need.
