CANtastic event this Saturday at Trig’s RiverWalk Centre
At 9 a.m. Saturday, April 14, six area teams will be ready and waiting to begin construction of their CANtastic creations. Teams will finally put their weeks of planning, design, calculation, can collection and pre-building to the test by actually building structures entirely of cans (and perhaps some boxes and bags) of food. All creations will highlight this year’s theme, “Shine a Light on Hunger.”
CANtastic combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry in our community. Competing area teams showcase their talents by designing and constructing sculptures made with donated or purchased canned goods. These creations are judged on criteria including creativity, complexity and use of color. At the close of the competition, prizes are awarded for Judges Choice, People’s Choice and Most Cans Used Following the Theme. All of the food used in the structures is donated to Rhinelander Area Food Pantry, (RAFP), for distribution.
The public is invited to come to the Signature Salon entrance of Trig’s RiverWalk Centre, near the Ace Hardware store to watch “the Build.” The public is also encouraged to vote for their favorite CANtastic creation by placing a can of food in the bin by that structure. The structures will be on display for two weeks in the former Family Dollar Store area for viewing and voting. Awards will be presented on Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m.
This year’s teams and planned CANtastic structures are: Lighthouse Keepers (DNR and UW-Extension)-lighthouse; Fire Brigade (Associated Bank)-campfire; Key Club-sun and more; Team Rhinelander G.M. & Toyota-car with headlights; Team Bethesda (Bethesda Lutheran Communities)-camping lantern; Champs-flashlight.
